The Super-Secret Origin of Nightclaw & Prowler
The story of Nightclaw and Prowler is as old as the Earth itself--literally. When the Earth was formed and life appeared on its surface, the energies of this new life created what we may refer to today as "elementals". There were six of these elementals: stone, fire, water, air, plant and animal. These beings were not-intelligent. Rather, they were forces of nature that drove the evolution of the entire planet. In moments of disaster or crisis, a given elemental force could instinctively choose a subject--a "champion", if you will--and have that subject use the power to avert or repair the damage caused.
It wasn't until the recorded year of 350 B.C. that the first man--an unknown Egyptian slave--was granted the power of the animal elemental. With this, the first super-powered being was born. But an unusual exchange was made. When the animal elemental granted man its power, it gained man's intelligence in return. Now self-aware, the animal elemental shared this new gift with the other elemental forces. There was an unfortunate consequence to this, however. Along with intelligence, the elementals also gained emotions. One elemental inparticular--water--became jealous of the vast power of the animal elemental and sought to steal it for itself. Thus began a centuries long battle between animal and water. Seeing no end in sight for such a conflict, the animal elemental began to hide its vast power in various creatures so the water elemental could not find and gain it.
This strategy proved a sucessful one until recently. A panther--the latest chosen vessel for the elemental power--was captured and taken to the Louisville Zoo in the United States. This in of itself was not a problem if not for the fact that the panther was unknowingly dying from an ailment. When the panther began to feel the effects of the illness, it realized that unless it transferred the power immediately it would be dispelled on its impending death. Desperate to find a worthy successor, the panther escaped its pen and panicked the zoo-going crowd.
Among the zoo's patrons were two siblings: Jessica and Andrew. Unaware of the panther's escape, the two were walking through the zoo when Andrew split off from his older sister to play a prank on her. Upon discovering her brother's absense, Jessie began searching for him and came face to face with the dying panther. In its last moments, the panther felt the purity of Jessie's soul and knew what it must do. As Jessica looked into the eyes of the animal, she heard two words in her mind:
At that moment, Andrew jumped from his hiding place and slapped Jessica on the shoulder just as the panther passed the elemental force into his sister. The force split between Jessica and Andrew and both were knocked to the ground. The panther collapsed and died as the siblings got to their feet, wondering what had just happened.
The next day at school, Jessica and Andrew began to discover the powers they had been granted. Jessica discovered her speed during a dodgeball game and Andrew discovered his strength when he hit a baseball clear out of sight. That night the two siblings discussed what they had discovered and Jessica told Andrew about what had happened at the zoo. They decided to keep their powers a secret and do what any kid would do with super powers: become super heroes!
Adopting a cat motif in honor of the panther that gave them their powers: Jessica and Andrew became the costumed crimefighters Nightclaw and Prowler!
And somewhere in the world, the water elemental waits....
